Where is the documentation ?
- The documentation for HtmlSearch is included in the download.
You can also read the documentation online.
- For information on the latest version and what has changed recently, please see the Revision History page.
Registration popup
- A Pop Up is displayed, when using
an unregistrered Pro Edition copy. As soon as you register your copy,
we'll send you a registration code that will make this pop up disappear.
Is HtmlSearch secure ?
- HtmlSearch does not write any data on your PC, nor transmits
data from your PC, so it is perfectly safe to use it.
Note that HtmlSearch may have difficulty reaching secure sites (e.g. site using HTTPS or that
require a password to enter), so the search may skip those pages.
The data that is displayed in the search results
is transmitted over the Internet and the browser itself may keep a local copy of it in its cache, so that's
only as secure as the transmission protocol, and the browser's cache availability.
In this respect it is not different from any other browser based application.
What about privacy ?
- HtmlSearch doesn't track or report the usage of the
application, the queries you make, or the data you view
(Page usage tracking may be done by your ISP or Web Site host, as part
of their operation, but that is unrelated to HtmlSearch).
Which Browser to use ?
- HtmlSearch works without any problems on any modern and stable version of either
Netscape (4.x or 6.2 or greater), MSIE (4.x, 5.x) or Opera (version 6).
- In general MSIE is faster than Netscape at loading and executing applets, at least on Windows.
- Netscape 6 is very slow, and any version prior to 6.2 tends to crash a lot.
- Both Opera and Netscape 6 have bugs that prevent them form successfully displaying
the HtmlSearch results in HTML (all the other samples work fine).
- MSIE 3 and Netscape 3 have so many problems that we can't even guarantee that the applet will work
with these browsers. Hardly anyone uses them anymore anyway... for good reasons.
Error Loading HtmlSearch
- If HtmlSearch doesn't load, try to clear the browser cache. Browsers tend to be confused
if their cache contains references to JavaScript or Java Applets that have changed.
Can I change the background color ?
- Yes with bgColor parameter available in the Pro Edition.
Internationalization and Language Support
- As of version 3.0, you can use languages other than English. Please see
the translation parameter available in the Pro Edition..
Can PDF files be searched ?
- No. PDF is a proprietary binary format that doesn't store text in clear, so HtmlSearch has no way
to search into it. Adobe Acrobat itself has some (limited) search capabilites, and you may be able
to find some shareware that allows you to search through PDF files.
